Occupant load is the maximum number of people that a building or specific space is designed to safely accommodate.
It is based on the capacity of exits and egress components.
The calculation is a key part of fire and life safety planning.
Importance of Occupant Load Calculation
Helps ensure safe evacuation during emergencies
Supports compliance with building and fire codes
Determines the required number and width of exits
Used to calculate plumbing fixture quantities
Assists in designing fire alarm and fire protection systems
Required for permits, approvals, and inspections
Methods of Calculation
Spaces without fixed seating:
Occupant Load = Floor Area ÷ Occupant Load Factor
Spaces with fixed seating:
Occupant load equals the total number of fixed seats, plus any standing areas calculated separately using standard load factors
Disclaimer
This calculator provides estimated occupant loads based on commonly adopted IBC criteria.
Final occupant load values must be verified and approved by the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), such as the building department or fire marshal.
